Have We Abandoned Net Zero?

Oil giant BP is the latest in a growing number of organisations to announce radical changes to it’s climate change strategy. It has said it will "fundamentally reset" the strategy as profits dropped sharply last year.

It is widely expected to say later this month that it will scale back renewable projects and increase oil and gas production following similar moves from rivals including Shell and Equinor. The full BBC article can be found here https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c30d4ernzqjo

Again, the decision is based on financial gain, or the lack of it. In many respects that is understandable; companies have to make money to satisfy shareholders and to finance investment.

The concern though is that scientists continue to tell us that the planet is burning. The evidence is clear – the melting glaciers at both poles mean that weather patterns have changed dramatically, many cities are under threat of extinction due to flooding, people’s health is impacted…there are many signs.

While the transition to net zero presents challenges, including high initial costs and technological hurdles, it also opens opportunities for economic growth, innovation, and job creation in the green sector. Businesses that prioritize sustainability gain a competitive edge, and countries investing in clean energy secure long-term prosperity.

We need to reduce our carbon footprint, and every action you take influences the world around you.

In the absence of governments and large corporations abandoning their stated targets for net zero by 2025, the question is what can you do to combat climate change? As it happens, quite a lot. Achieving net zero requires a collective effort from governments, businesses, and individuals. So we all have a part to play.

By understanding your carbon footprint, you gain the power to reduce it—contributing to a healthier planet, a stronger economy, and a more sustainable future.
