Climate change and innovation

At the Congress of Business (COB) last week, many sectors of the Glasgow community came together to continue to drive and inspire action within cities and businesses towards our common goal of achieving Net Zero.

One of the key words we came up with as a group, centred around the theme of climate change, was “Innovation”.

In the not-so-distant past, many in business, government and perhaps even education assumed that there would need to be some kind of stand-off between economic growth and climate change measures. The bridge between the then and the now is very much along the lines of the relatively small costs of today, offsetting the much larger costs of tomorrow, and at the heart of that is innovation.

Positive action against climate change not only can and does lessen the risk of bad things occurring but on a positive perspective it increases efficiency, drive new technology and lowers risks.

This in turn encourages investment, creates jobs, and contributes to a healthier economy that in theory should benefit the health and well of its citizens.

Coupled with the innovation in technology, is the innovation in leadership, which could be argued is of greater importance. The need for all-in leadership, which manages risks and grasps opportunities is vital. This in turn is attractive to investors, staff and customers who see this visionary outlook as vital to the future of the planet.
